International Journal of River Basin Management (JRBM) | Vol. 21. Issue 1, 2023The Journal of River Basin Management (JRBM) plays a specific role in promoting a cross-sectorial approach encompassing all aspects of river and floodplain management, with a truly global perspective. The Journal is a response by the scientific and professional community to the World Water Vision and calls for an integrated approach to water resources management.

 Overview

As usual, the published papers touch on multiple topics and explore a variety of issues that water managers and researchers face daily. Focusing on case studies, a few papers published in this issue discuss ecological changes in surface waterbodies, showing how humans can be a major driver of such alteration but also how they can help in properly managing rivers and estuaries, eventually leading to improved ecological conditions. Other papers focus on monitoring and modelling land transformation and feedback on river systems, to better plan land management practices. Another typical issue of river management, flood risk, is touched on by looking at the Dutch multi-layer safety approach, while sand mining is discussed with reference to an Indian case study. Additional contributions explore methods and techniques that can be useful at both the basin and the local scale for multiple purposes, highlighting the transdisciplinary character of JRBM. The papers collected in this issue show that river basin management has both an international and interdisciplinary nature, and poses a multitude of research questions that need a combination of expertise in order to be tackled.
