The international association for the promotion of cooperation with scientists from the New Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union (INTAS) has launched a series of calls, making available 25.2 million euro for international scientific research.
Among the calls, the following may be of interest to our readers:
Open call for proposals for research projects and networks related to all scientific fields in both fundamental and applied science;
Belarus call for proposals in all areas of science. Research teams must include at least one Belarussian partner.
In all cases the deadline for submission is 13 June 2003.
INTAS has also published calls for young NIS scientist
fellowships, for which 2.5 million euro is earmarked, and innovation grants, for
which 500,000 euro is available. Applications for the grants must be received by
11 July 2003.
Proposers are invited to consult the full text of the calls at the INTAS website
before submitting proposals.

HR Wallingford has been awarded a Marie Curie Industry Host Fellowship to support a visiting researcher to assist on 2 separate international research projects in coastal and river engineering.

An ETNET (European Thematic Network for Education and Training) SPII/SPIII / IAHR-EGW (International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research and the European Engineering Graduate School of Environment Water) course: HydroWeb 2003: 'Web-based Collaborative Engineering in HydroScience', running from May/June 2003 as an open Internet course and is a joint education experiment with the target of introducing and applying three topics:
Performance of projects in an international, interdisciplinary and distributed environment
Web-based Collaborative Engineering
Distance Learning Technology
A special evaluation seminar will be organized with the course
participants during the XXX IAHR congress 2003 in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The course is open for all academic institutions worldwide offering course programmes (MSc, PhD) in civil, water or environmental engineering. Interested institutions should contact the course organizer till April 4 2003. The course organizer will check in advance the Internet access from the partner location to the Web-based course platform and discuss the organization of a local or online preparation seminar.
Final registration of the course participants will be:
Window I: Monday 28 April 2003
Window II: Monday 02 June 2003
The course organizer, in close cooperation with the course partner institutions, will complete the team composition

A review of activities of the UNESCO Chair ‘Environmental Education in Siberia’ of the Altai State Technical University, Barnaul, Russia, during January – March has been made available. The Russian UNESCO Chair, held by Prof. Alexander Tskhay, is the initiator of the project "Water quality management information tools for river basins based on environmental and economic considerations" which was included in the International Scientific INTAS Program. Partners in this project are Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium; University for Agricultural Sciences, Wien, Austria; Ecole des Mines, Paris, France; RosNIIVKh, Russian Research Institute for Integrated Water Management and Protection, Yekaterinburg, Russian Federation.
This project is devoted to the problem of water resources management with respect to the new Water Framework Directive of the European Union.

European Conference on ‘Desalination and the Environment - Fresh Water for All’, during the UN International Year of Freshwater, and organised by the International Water Association (IWA), European Desalination Society (EDS), Malta Resources Authority (MRA and the Water Services Corporation (WSC). The conference will be discussing freshwater for all and how desalination can supplement some of the critically lacking amounts of water needed for sustainability with limited depleted natural sources of water. Seawater desalination and water supply modelling will also be examined.

‘7th International HCH and Pesticides Forum - Towards the Establishment of an Obsolete POPs/Pesticides Stockpiles Fund for Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) and New Independent States (NIS)’, will provide a platform for the creation of an international fund for the elimination of thousands of tonnes of obsolete pesticides in CEEC/NIS. Hosted in part by the International HCH and Pesticides Association, and supported by, amongst others, the EC-Europaid project TACIS (Tacis Programme provides grant-financed technical assistance to 13 countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, aiming to enhance the transition process in these countries).
