Abstract: This study describes a novel technique that uses infrared thermography to estimate mean flow velocity in shallow flows, based on time of travel. The experimental setup consists in an experimental installation that comprises a flume, equipment to locally heat the water and an infrared camera pointing downwards above a flume. The hot water, acting as a heat tracer, is visible through thermography. The recorded images can then be analyzed to compute velocity. Results are in accordance with the results obtained by using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter.
