Abstract: Hydraulic model results are presented of exchange flow in a river mouth consisting of a river channel connected to the sea at the junction of the breakwaters. Using the exchange-flow hydraulics elaborated recently by Laanearu and Davies (2007), it is found that internal energy loss is important to include in the maximal exchange-flow case. Archival field measurements in the P? rnu River mouth that demonstrate the occurrence of a stratified bi-directional exchange flow under variable sea-level situations and river water discharges are used to evaluate the model. The channel geometry in the hydraulic model is specified according to the observed bathymetric conditions at the P? rnu River site (represented by quadratic channel shape parameter: ξ=1. 8). The two-layer flow prediction of interface depths and the internal head loss for maximal net exchange rate with the barotropic net flow component in the surface layer are estimated.
