Abstract: Because of the frequently extreme climate, embankments break at times under the condition of exceeding standard flood. In this paper, a method of protecting embankment downstream slope by using geo-synthetic materials is presented based on the mechanism of dam breach. Experiments are carried out for the hydraulic characteristics of flow over three kinds of geo-synthetic materials. The resistances of geo-synthetic materials against flow are studied in detail. According to the hydraulic model tests, the rules of distribution of water depth, velocity and shear stress over geo-synthetic materials along the dam slope are gotten with different heights of overtopping. Meanwhile, the friction coefficients of the three geo-synthetic materials are obtained. Furthermore, the mechanical characteristics of each geo-synthetic, which serves as shielding materials for slope protection, are analyzed. The results show that all the three kinds of geo-synthetics can be used to slope protection. The geo-synthetic materials of 300g/m2 have the priority according to the mechanical characteristics.
