Abstract: The tampering of the hydro-geological systems, and the resulting by product of these actions unless properly managed, could be harmful to the resource as well as to the environment as a whole. Salinity intrusion and the eventual degradation of both the land and water is one such case. This study conceptualizes the salinity intrusion process and presents a model that would facilitate the identification of influential parameters in Salinity intrusion and simulate the aquifer behavior with respect to salinity intrusion in a laboratory setting. It also describes a number of selected cases of salinity intrusion in the Asia Pacific region, namely in New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Sri Lanka and analyzes its characteristics, impact on the environment and management practices that could be adopted. It also presents a case of short- term variation in water quality within the Waiwhetu aquifer.
