Abstract: This paper presents a multi-objective decision-making model for the coordinative dispatch of flow and sediment in reservoirs. The model was developed to address the contradiction between sediment trapping and flow regulation in reservoirs. The maximum benefits of flood control, hydropower generation and navigation of a reservoir were considered as the target functions, and the corresponding submodels for the reservoir operation were established. The functional relationships between the reservoir operation parameters and targets were derived so that all three targets can be linked together. The model was tested by applying it to the Three Gorges Project (TGP) in the flood recession period. The results demonstrate that this model is a useful tool to aid in handling the contradictive operations in a reservoir.
