Abstract: Modern turbulence closures have opened remarkable avenues for the simulation of fluid flows at much affordable costs than alternative, time-dependent counterparts. These closures have been mostly put forward by the aeronautical and automotive industries, and have tremendous applications in hydraulics in general, and hydraulic structures in particular. In this Keynote Lecture, we review the foundations of this important field of research, and present some examples which show the advantages (and limitations) of these techniques. Examples include the flows past stepped spillways, and gates.
