Abstract: This paper presents an ongoing research on sediment transport measurements by image processing. The method is based on expressing the instantaneous, vector solid discharge as qs= C·v s·d50, where C is the areal concentration of sediments in motion, vs is the sediment velocity and d50 is the median diameter of the grains. The approach taken is Eulerian; variables describing the sediment motion are thus intrinsically defined as spatially-averaged quantities. The method was firstly developed for the measurement of motion of natural sand particles, yet it can be applied to other particle types as well. Some examples of the method application are described, with reference to one-dimensional bed load and to local abutment scour in clear-water conditions. The potentialities of the methodology are discussed with its limitations and with the further developments called by the latter.
