Abstract: Mimicking an open channel flow in a well-controlled physical model, the ex-situ scour testing device (ESTD), to study the erosion of cohesive soils is crucial to reproduce the hydrodynamic forces expected in the field. The well-controlled system enables the measurement of hydrodynamic forces acting on cohesive soil samples using a special designed sensor. Samples are mounted on the sensor that can measure shear and normal forces eroding samples. A 58 cm long, 12 cm wide and 2 cm deep channel was designed, in which the flow was propelled by a rolling belt on top of the channel and supported by a pump. Using particle image velocimetry (PIV), it was found that the belt itself produced an S-shape velocity profile. Higher belt speeds generated more curved velocity profiles. The top part of the profile had a higher velocity gradient compared to the lower part. When the belt interacts with the pump, the velocity profile gets close to that of an open channel flow.
