Abstract: Stilling basins for low head hydraulic structures are normally provided with baffle elements (Mason 1982). The best known example of a typical baffle basin is the USBR basin III (Peterka 1983). It comprises chute blocks to corrugate the approach jet and lift a flow portion from the floor, baffle blocks as impact elements and a triangular end sill sloping 1:2 to deflect remaining bottom currents to the surface of the tailwater flow. Provided the unit discharge is limited to 20m2s-1, basin III be considered as a minimum length structure (Hager 1992).
