A Model for Probabilistic Estimation of Steady-State Catchments of Pumping Wells in Heterogeneous Aquifers

Abstract: The analysis of capture zones of pumping wells is useful to design wellhead protection programs and to optimize pumping systems. Analytical models that are used to give an estimation of well catchments in uniform background flow usually fail in the interpretation of the aquifers heterogeneity influence. A stochastic approach is herein used to assess the uncertainty associated to prediction of steady state capture zones in heterogeneous domains. The results show the influence of logconductivity distribution, as interpreted by its variance and integral scale. Conceptually consistent equations of capture zones delineation are proposed.
