Abstract: Given the growing scarcity of clean freshwater sources, the water industry as a whole has largely focused on the sustainable distribution and security of potable water. However, the less glamorous task of wastewater management is a constant pressure for all, requiring an equally significant investment into research and development. As if to further highlight this problem, the average age of sewer pipes in the UK is rapidly increasing, with many pipes still in service long past their intended lifespan. This article explores the advances in machine learning which are helping to better manage wastewater (or sewer) networks.
