NewsFlash is an
electronic digest of news and information on hydraulic engineering
and research published monthly by IAHR for over Six Thousand
subscribers in the international water community. |
IAHR News:
iahr.org Webserver
The iahr.org
server was down for three days over the Easter Weekend (28 March-1st
April) - owing to temporary technical problems - apologies for
this - the first time our server has been unavailable! However,
business was back to usual immediately afterwards - with over
300 unique visitors on April 4th.
Job Vacancies and rivers-list@iahr.org
Rivers-list@iahr.org is providing a useful role in complementing
NewsFlash for disseminating information on specialist jobs in
consulting and research. Agriconsulting SpA in Rome, Italy recently
found good candidates for a temporary watershed modelling specialist
post. If you are looking for specialist personnel in river research
and engineering, or are interested in topics related to river
engineering and research why not subscribe? To join send an email
containing the word "subscribe" to rivers-list-request@iahr.org
IAHR Fluid Mechanics Section:
The IAHR Fluid Mechanics Section seeks nominations for hosting
the following symposia:
*6th International Symposium on Stratified Flows (ISSF): The successor
to the 5th ISSF held in Vancouver in July 2000 is to be held in
2006
*4th International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics (ISEH):
The successor to the 3rd ISEH held in Tempe, Arizona, is to be
held in 2004.
Outline nominations for either of the above meetings, with suggested
dates, scope, objectives and institution infrastructure should
be submitted as soon as possible to Peter A. Davies, the Section
Chair ( e-mail: p.a.davies@dundee.ac.uk
), and by July 1st at the latest.
Publishers Corner:
The IAHR Members Directory and website contains a full list of
leading publishers (see "eLibrary") active in our field.
However, there is a vast amount of interesting "grey"
literature published through small publishers such as research
institutes, universities. A few examples are given below:
*Delft Hydraulics has on its web site a well organised list of
publications in all fields related to IAHR activities: www.wldelft.nl/rnd/publ/books/index.html
*Center for Applied Coastal Research at the University of Delaware,
USA publishes Reports on all aspects of research in coastal engineering
at
www.coastal.udel.edu/publications.html
*UK research and consultancy organisation HR Wallingford website
containing a searchable list of titles covering catchments, coastal,
estuaries, ports and rivers
www.hrwallingford.co.uk/publications/search.asp
*CEDEX, the Spanish national research and consultancy organisation
(and home of the IAHR Secretariat) website contains a highly detailed
list of publications in the Spanish language of interest to water
specialists:
www.cedex.es/documentacion/publicaciones.html
*The Water and Environment Bookshop, part of WRC in the UK, publishes
books in the water and waste sector including recently the 4th
Edition of the well-known sewer rehabilitation manual: www.webookshop.com/webookshop.nsf
*VNIIG, the Russian Research Institute of Hydraulic Engineering,
publishes a list of reports and monographs (in English) at: www.vniig.ru/en/pub/publications.htm
*Dr Hubert Chanson maintains a useful website at the University
of Queensland on environmental fluid mechanics, hydraulics and
water sciences including articles reports and photographic material:

New On-Line Guide to selecting Manning's
Roughness Coefficient
Software Supplier, Boss International, has added to it's web site
a downloadable file on how to select Manning's Roughness Coefficient.
Most hydraulic computations related to indirect estimates of discharge
require an evaluation of the roughness characteristics of the channel.
This document contains photographs and data for a wide range of
channel conditions that can be used to select roughness coefficients
for other natural channels.

Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS)
Prizes
The Academy of the TWAS Prizes has recently expanded the fields
in which the prizes will be given and we are now encouraging individuals
and scientific organizations of excellence to submit nomination
forms. Prizes will be granted in the following fields: biology,
chemistry, mathematics, physics, agricultural science, earth sciences,
engineering sciences and medical sciences. Each prize carries a
US$10,000 award and a plague highlighting the recipient's major
contributions to his or her field. The prizes usually are given
at major event - for example, the TWAS General Meeting - where recipients
are asked to present a lecture in honour of receiving the award.

A New Tool for Rehabilitating Sewers
HR Wallingford has produced a document setting out the general principles
that should be considered when repairing or
rehabilitating sewers. This work supports the European Standard
on Drain and Sewer systems outside buildings and has involved specialists
from 10 organisations across 5 European countries. At present there
is a range of national methods for measuring the structural, environmental
and hydraulic performance of drain and sewerage systems. Individual
countries often have their own rehabilitation criteria, but there
was a need for generic guidance providing best practice advice that
can be used across Europe. This should be flexible and take account
of local issues. The new document allows users to select the most
appropriate criteria, applicable to their own country.
