for flood reconstruction in central Europe The
European Investment Bank, the European Union's (EU) financing institution, puts
in place an emergency special support credit programme, for financing immediate
flood relief in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovakia. EIB's intention
is that loans directed to specific projects and action benefiting immediately
the flood stricken areas could cover on an exceptional basis up to 100% of external
funding requirements and have very fine interest rates, as well as particularly
long repayment periods of up to 30 years. The Bank has offered to help the reconstruction
projects of private and public entities in those sectors in which it is traditionally
active. The exact amount of the flood reconstruction special support programme
and its operational details will be announced in the near future once the needs
will be identified and evaluated. For more information you can contact Mrs Helen

Research on alluvial processes I
am engaged in fluvial dynamics teaching and research, and I would like to collect
and exchange information on the application of chaos, fractals geometry, self-organisation
and other non-linear theories to understand the mechanism of the alluvial process. Information
on the following topics would be appreciated: 1. thermodynamic understanding
of origin of river networks configuration . 2. the relationship between fractal
structures and energy dissipation rate for |
river system; 3. non-linear mechanism for alluvial
river evolution from straight to meandering; 4. origin of braiding river; 5.
3-D measurement for fractal inner structure of cohesive sediment flow; Prof.Yang

Intensive Use of Groundwater - Challenges and Opportunities
By Llamas, M.R. and Custodio, E.
Publisher: AA. Balkema; ISBN: 90 5809 390 5; €149,00;
Publication date: August 2002 The book is written by authors from different
countries and disciplines. The scope is not only to present the conventional hydrogeological
aspects of the issue, but more importantly, the ecological, legal, institutional,
economic, and social challenges and opportunities of such intensive groundwater
use. It should be clear that different scientists, experts and stakeholders may
interpret a given situation very differently, perceptions also change through
time, and possible solutions are not unique and may often involve trade-offs,
and accommodation to local circumstances, established policies and politics. Nevertheless,
it is intended to propose actions in order to assure a sustainable groundwater
development. It is expected that this book may constitute a step-forward to help
clarify the importance of groundwater and its far-reaching implications. Among
these implications can be mentioned the general relevance of groundwater development
to eradiate poverty through providing potable water and food to the poor in a
cheap and fast way. Website: balkema.ima.nl/Scripts/cgiBalkema.exe/new

Manual on Scour at Bridges and other Hydraulic Structures By
R.W.P. May, J.C. Ackers and A.M. Kirby Publisher: CIRIA; ISBN: 0 86017 551
0 Structures built in or near rivers and other channels can be vulnerable
to scour around their foundations. If the depth of scour becomes significant,
the stability of the foundations may be endangered, with a consequent risk to
the structure of damage or failure. The factors influencing the development of
scour are complex and vary according to the type of structure. Protection works
for preventing scour need to be designed to withstand the flow forces imposed
on them and have to be practicable to build and install, while minimising adverse
environmental effects. This manual is relevant to scour problems in the UK and
worldwide, affecting both new and existing structures. E-mail: enquiries@ciria.org.uk Website:

and Prevention of Leaks from Dams By Plata Bedmar, A. and Araguas, L. Publisher:
AA. Balkema; ISBN: 90 5809 355 7; €129,00; Publication date: August 2002 The
books describes in 12 chapters the modern tools available for the detection and
prevention of leaks from dams and reservoirs, including water chemistry, isotope
analyses, artificial tracers, permeability tests, geophysical methods and techniques
for the localisation of water flows both inside the reservoir and boreholes. Numerous
case studies are presented corresponding to studies performed by the authors in
more than 30 dams from 18 countries. Website: balkema.ima.nl/Scripts/cgiBalkema.exe/new |
