Waves in Ocean Engineering
by M.J. Tucker and E.G. Pitt
Publisher: Elsevier; ISBN: 0-08-043566-1; Price: 134 Euro; 2001
This book covers the whole field of wave studies of interest to
applied oceanographers and ocean engineers. It has considerable
relevance to coastal engineering. The book is split into 12 sections,
the first of which is devoted to the practical applications of wave
studies and to the history of wave research. The rest of the book
covers the measurement of waves, including remote sensing; the analysis
and interpretation of wave data; estimating the properties of the
extreme "Design Wave", as well as of the generality of
waves for fatigue calculations; waves in finite depth, wave generation
by wind and wave forecasting models; non-linear effects, and errors
and uncertainties in wave data.

Pipelines and Risers
by Y. Bai
Publisher: Elsevier; ISBN: 0-08-043712-5; Price: 134 Euro; 2001
This book summarizes the author's 18 years of research and engineering
experience at universities, classification societies and design
offices. The intention is to develop this book as a textbook for
graduate students, as it includes design guidelines for engineers
and references for researchers. It is hoped that this book may also
be used to aid the design of offshore structures as it details applied
mechanics and design/engineering.

Theory and Applications of Nonviscous Fluid Flows
by R.K. Zeytounian
Publisher: Springer; ISBN: 3-540-41412 6; Price: 74.95 Euro
The purpose of this book is to present a broad panorama of model
problems encountered in nonviscous Newtonian fluid flows. This is
achieved by investigating the significant features of the solutions
of the corresponding equations using the method of asymptotic analysis.

COAST3D project results on-line
The Scientific Results of this important European Research project
on Coastal Morphodynamics have been published on-line. The EU funded
COAST3D project (1997-2001) has the objective of:
-to improve understanding of the physics of coastal sand transport
and morphodynamics
-to remedy the present lack of validation data of sand transport
and morphology suitable for testing numerical models of coastal
processes
-to test a representative sample of numerical models for predicting
coastal sand transport and morphodynamics against this data
-to deliver validated modelling tools, and methodologies for their
use, in a form suitable for coastal zone management
-to deliver a set of guidelines for practical coastal zone management
(CZM)
The project COAST3D has recently finished, and the scientific results
are available on the project website:

UNEP.Net Freshwater Portal
The declining state of the world's freshwater resources, in terms
of quantity and quality, may prove to be the dominant issue on the
environment and development agenda of the coming century. If present
consumption patterns continue, two out of every three persons on
Earth will live in water-stressed conditions by the year 2025. In
order to help environmental assessment professionals and policy
makers keep up to date with the most authoritative information on
this critical environmental field, the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) opened the UNEP.Net Freshwater Portal, an online
gateway to information about freshwater.

Floods, droughts, poverty and science
by W.J.R. Alexander, Professor Emeritus, Department of Civil
Engineering, University of Pretoria.
"Poverty is tearing Africa apart. It is the root cause of internal
unrest, cross-border conflicts, land redistribution problems and
political instability in many African countries. Natural disasters
(principally floods and droughts) are often the triggering mechanism
for the downward spiral of impoverishment and eventually to anarchy
if not brought under control. Is there anything that scientists
can do to check and reverse this trend?"

Postgraduate Masters Course on Hydroinformatics
Hydroinformatics uses simulation modelling and information and communication
technologies (ICT) to help us understand and solve problems of hydraulics,
hydrology and environmental engineering for better management of
water-based systems. Increasingly, new ICT tools are being introduced
to collect and analyse hydrological, hydrometric and water quality
data. In 1991 IHE was the first to promote Hydroinformatics as a
discipline and as a programme. Find out more about the IHE Hydroinformatics
Masters Course at: www.ihe.nl/education/masters/hi.htm
