World Water Actions
Inventory
The World Water Actions Inventory was designed for two purposes: 1)
To list and display all actions that are synthesised in the final
report being prepared by the Water Action Unit for the 3rd World Water
Forum (Kyoto, March 2003). 2) To solicit reactions on the information
provided and encourage public contributions, in order to report on
water actions being implemented in some |
parts of the world that are not yet inventoried by the Water Action
Unit. If you have not yet checked the database, please visit
www.worldwatercouncil.org/search_actions.php
and tell about any actions that may be missing, or about actions
that have not been described as accurately as they might have.

Agricultural Effects on Ground and Surface
Waters: Research at the Edge of Science and Society
by Joop Steenvoorden, Frans Claessen and Jaap Willems
Publisher: IAHS; ISBN 1-901502-76-7; Publication date: April 2002;
Price £63.50
This volume is an outcome of the International Conference on "Agricultural
Effects on Ground and Surface Waters" (Wageningen, The Netherlands,
October 2000). It addresses the prevention and reduction of water
pollution and water scarcity caused by agricultural activities in
northern Europe and North America. Nitrogen and phosphate compounds
are a major focus. The themes: risk assessment by monitoring, model
development, and decision support studies are considered at the
levels at which policy development and water management take place:
the agricultural production unit, the regional level, and the national
level. It includes the Wageningen Statement, agreed by the conference
participants, containing recommendations to governments and international
organizations.

Regional Water System Management -Water
Conservation, Water Supply and System Integration
E. Cabrera, R. Cobacho, and J.R. Lund
Publisher: Balkema; ISBN: 90 5809 377 8; EUR 129,00; June 2002
The importance to implement sustainable water managements is actually
out of discussion. That means to balance water resources and water
uses mainly during drought peroiods. In other words the best equilibrium
between supply and demand must be achieved. The natural territory
to establish that balance is the watershed that, most of the times,
is a region as well. This book contains invited lectures presented
by well-known authors to the international seminar Regional Water
Management -Water Conservation, Water Supply, System Integration
held in Valencia (Spain) at the UIMP. The publication provides a
general view of the basic water management principles for this 21st
century, which are, certainly, very far from those of the 20th century.

The European Water Industry: Market Drivers
and Responses

CWC Publishing, ISBN 1903050200,London, UK, Price: GBP 595 (EUR
967), Publication date: 2002
Presents in the first section an overview of the European water
and wastewater market related to water resources, development of
water services, market size and growth, water provision, and sewerage
and sewage treatment. The second section focuses on market drivers.
It looks at how the European water industry is affected by legislation
and addresses the main European Union (EU) directives and their
importance to the accession countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
The third section deals with government responses, regulatory and
legal structures, financing compliance, EBRD, EIB and EU initiatives,
privatization, the private sector, PPPs in accession countries,
multi-utilities and internationalisation, and the scope for competition
in water and waste management.

Friend 2002-Regional Hydrology: Bridging
the Gap Between Research and Practice
by Henny A. J. van Lanen & Siegfried Demuth
co-editors: E. Servat, R. Ibbitt, C. Prudhomme, M. F. Bari, D. Hughes,
M. del Carmen Llasat & S. H. Mkhandi
Publisher: IAHS; ISBN: 1-901502-81-3; Publication date: March 2002;
Price: £73.50
This volume comprises papers presented at the 4th International
Conference on FRIEND held in Cape Town, South Africa in March 2002,
which focused on bridging the gap between knowledge, research and
practical applications. The papers demonstrate how advances in hydrology
can be used for the development of integrated river basin management
to ensure the sustainable development of water resources. Examples
illustrate the incorporation of research results into operational
hydrology and water resources planning.

New UK network of academics in coastal
research established
A new network of academics and other professionals working in the
fields of Coastal Structures, Beach Processes and Coastal Waters
has been formed in the UK. It started in March 2002 and will run
for three years. The networks are funded by the Engineering and
Physical Sciences Research Council and supported by the Environment
Agency and DEFRA. The main objectives of the networks are to encourage
new multidisciplinary research collaborations and to bring together
an extended community of researchers and end-users of research.
These objectives will be achieved through a programme of meetings
and a website http://cozone.org.uk/.
Both will be used to assist network members to identify key issues
for research and to form collaborative teams to address these issues.
