World Commission on Dams
There has been an increasing debate about the role and usefulness
of dams for water supply, irrigation, power and flood prevention.
This has culminated in the recent publication of the report by the
World Commission on Dams.
A separate strand to this debate is the growing pressure for the
removal of dams. Does the removal of dams pose new hydraulic problems
that need to be addressed?
A disscussion of these issues is currently underway on the e-mail
discussion group rivers-list. For information visit www.iahr.org

Environmental Management Of A Small Brook
As a hydraulical-hydrological laboratory we are currently involved
in a global study concerning the environmental management of a small
brook. One of the main topics concerns fish migration along the
brook.
Can anyone provide me some basic information (references, web sites,
data, case-studies,..) on this topic of fish migration in small
rivers?

Looking for Postdoctoral Opportunity
I wish to introduce myself as a Ph.D. holder in Mechanics of Sediment
Transport and Hydraulics as a major. I am currently working as a Research
Assistant at the Sediment Research Lab., Dept. of Hydraulic Engineering,
Tsinghua University, Beijing, P. R. China.
I have in all 10 years study and research experience in hydraulics
and river dynamics. Majority of my research contributions were published
in referred journals (in all 14 publications). I am good at the development
of measurement systems, the numerical calculation and the use of computer.
I would like to provide complete and letters of recommendations for
the prospective employers. Contract: Wang Dianchang c/o Prof. Wang
Xingkui, Sediment Research Lab., Dept. of Hydraulic Engineering, Tsinghua
University, Beijing, 100084, P. R. China, Email: wangdch96@mails.tsinghua.edu.cn
Remote Sensing of River Discharge
I am interested in problems of remote sensing of river discharge through
surface microwave observations.
The active microwave sensing of rivers relies on Bragg backscattering
of electromagnetic waves by river waves at the centimetric to the
decimetric scale. The radar detection of river currents thus necessitates
a good knowledge of the river wave spectra.I seek publications or
sources of experience dealing with the observation, the theory and
the modeling of river waves at the above mentioned wavelengths.
Anticipated thanks, JD. Creutin e-mail: jcreutin@mail.iihr.uiowa.edu

Guidance on designing reservoir outlet works
Water supply reservoirs tend to be characterised by their dam structures
but of equal importance - and of much greater variety - are their
outlet systems. A review of the principal types of reservoir outlet
structures built in the UK during the past 50 years has thus been
published in the latest issue of the ICE/IAHR Water and Maritime Engineering
Journal (WME) to serve as a future design reference.
