A recently published IAHS "red book": Interdisciplinary
perspectives on drinking water risk assessment and management
Edited by: Eric G. Reichard, Fred S. Hauchmann & Ana Maria Sancha.
IAHS Publication no. 260 (published January 2000) in the IAHS Series
of Proceedings and Reports. ISBN 1-901502-11-2; 178 + xiv pp.; price
£33. This publication provides an interdisciplinary and international
overview of current issues in drinking water risk assessment and
management. It comprises 22 full-papers, plus abstracts of further
papers, selected from the Second International Symposium on Assessing
and Managing Health Risks from Drinking Water Contamination: Approaches
and Applications, held at the University of Chile, Santiago, in
September 1998. The goal of the meeting, like that of the first
symposium held in Rome in 1994, is to bring together specialists
from a variety of disciplines (including health and hydrological
sciences) to gather and exchange information on drinking water risk
assessment and management in both developed and developing countries.
The Santiago meeting had a special focus on arsenic in drinking
water, a topic of great importance in Chile, as well as in other
parts of the world. Please send orders and enquiries to: Mrs Jill

New Book - "Flood Estimation Handbook" - successor of Flood
Studies Report (1975) (published by Institute of Hydrology, UK.
The Flood Estimation Handbook (FEH) is a new publication from the
Institute of Hydrology, giving guidance on rainfall and river flood
frequency estimation in the UK. Flood frequency estimates are required
for the planning and assessment of flood defences, and the design
of other structures such as bridges, culverts, and reservoir spillways.
There is an increasing demand for estimates that can form the base
for flood risk maps, important in the planning of new developments.
The FEH also provides methods for assessing the rarity of notable
rainfalls or floods, which are of interest to insurers and others.
The procedures are clearly explained, and supporting theory and
results included. The five volumes are accompanied by software (WINFAP-FEH)
and digital data (CD-ROM). The FEH largely supersedes the Flood
Studies Report of 1975. For more information see www.nwl.ac.uk/feh

As part of the Coastal Guide Programme, the EUCC is compiling an
internet database of ICM Education and Training Courses. Once complete,
the database will be accessible and searchable through the Coastal

Although initially focusing on courses offered in Europe, we also
welcome notification of courses offered outside Europe that are
open to European citizens. To include a course in the database,
a questionnaire, to complete so that all course details are collected
and presented in a standardized format, can be downloaded directly
from the Coastal Guide website
