Year 2000 international survey on fishways
An international survey on fishways is being conducted
with the purpose of generating information that will influence the
direction of future research on fishways. The survey is intended
for people with experience with, and opinions, on fishways, including:
biologists, engineers, researchers, catchment managers, and flow
regulators. If you fit this criteria, and would like to participate
in the survey please contact Chris Katopodis (Regional Habitat Engineer,
Fisheries and Oceans Canada); or Lindsay White (a graduate student
from the Co-operative Research Centre for Catchment Hydrology, Australia).
For a copy of the questionnaire form please e-mail

Modelling mean wave direction
I am trying to use refdifsv12 and I have some trouble to define
the mean wave direction (theta m) at the first row of the grid.
It can be defined in the file indat.dat but the refdif model seems
to use a nul mean wave direction in all the cases. Does somebody
know this problem and have a solution? Jerome Froger BRGM

Job search: coastal sediment dynamic modelling or experimental
studies
My name is Alexis Berthot and I have passed a Master in physical
oceanography (5th university year) in Marseille (FRANCE). I did
most of my projects in sediment dynamic, with special emphasise
on numerical modelling of coastal sediment dynamic related to shoreline
evolution and biological processes. My aim is to contribute to the
development of research programs in Coastal Protection and Environmental
care. That is why, I am very interested in coastal physical studies
especially for the application to shore protection and coastal development.
At the moment, I would like to carry on my education by a PhD. Therefore,
could you please inform me of subjects about coastal sediment dynamic
modelling or experimental studies at which I may have an interest.

Video clips of open channel flow phenomena
Do you have or know of any video clips of open channel flow phenomena
in digital (e.g., MPG) format that you would be willing to share?
Increasingly we are seeing non-engineers in classes we teach who
have limited or no knowledge of open channel flow. We are therefore
seeking short video clips that could be incorporated as part of
the open channel flow lectures. Because video cassette equipment
is often not available, we are looking for something that could
be stored on a laptop computer. Footage of hydraulic jumps, flume
studies, and hydraulic structures (model or prototype) would be
of special interest. We would of course acknowledge the source of
any video clips. Thank you for your attention and help. -- Martin

Recent developments in the field of coastal dynamic processes
I would like to enrol my e-mail id to acquire recent developments
in the field of coastal dynamic processes. I am basically marine
geologist with specialisation in sediment dynamics and sediment
chemistry. Presently I am a project scientist in Institute for Ocean
Management, Anna University, India and concentrating on the impact
of sediment transport to the coastal zone near Pulicat lake ecosystem
(second largest brackish water lake in India) due to the development
of port in the south. I am doctoral degree holder and looking for
suitable post doc position in coastal sediment dynamics related
problems.

Researching commercial software for density dependent flow and
transport
I am currently researching commercial software for density dependent
flow and transport. I currently run a web store at
http://www.GroundwaterSoftware.com where customers can purchase
groundwater software online and download it immediately. I graduated
from the University of Waterloo and used a program called WATRAN;
however, this program is just a FORTRAN code. We want to have the
option to provide the software for download and it must come with
good recommendations. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Doctoral / Post-doctoral Research Position: Environmental Fluid
Mechanics (Karlsruhe, Germany)
The Institute for Hydromechanics (IfH) at the University of Karlsruhe,
Germany has an opening on a continuing research project supported
by the German Science Foundation (DFG). The project is concerned
with the fluid mechanics of shallow fluid layers (such as the coastal
zone) perturbed by wakes from obstacles (such as islands). Laboratory
experimental studies on flow behavior, mixing and energy transfer
characteristics and turbulence generation are being conducted. Theoretical
studies include hydrodynamic stability calculations for wake behavior.
Initially the applicant will be involved in the theoretical analysis.
The position requires good skills in applied mathematics combined
with a thorough background in fluid mechanics. For enquiries contact:
Prof. Gerhard H. Jirka or Dipl.-Ing. Carl v. Carmer
