Secretariat News

Membership Cards

We will no longer automatically be issuing Membership cards - anyone who would like to receive a Membership card anyway should contact the Secretariat.

For anyone interested in rivers...

IAHR has launched a new electronic discussion group available to anyone interested in the scientific, technical, environmental, social or legislative aspects of river management. The list called "Rivers-List" is moderated by Dr Alain Petitjean of LNH, Chatou, France, (Chairman of our fluvial hydraulics section) and is aimed at sharing information in a controlled environment on new approaches, experiences, issues, problems, job vacancies and events.

Experience in other areas (urban drainage and coastal engineering) indicates that Rivers-List has the potential to provide an excellent new forum for discussion and information. If your interests lie in this area we would like to invite you to subscribe to the list by sending a message to rivers-list-request@iahr.org with the message "subscribe" in the text. Unsubscribing is just as easy, and all messages will be archived on our home page:

Please do publicise the existence of this new forum - the wider the circle of subscribers the livelier the discussion!

Server Problems

Due to server problems, the Secretariat has been difficult to reach recently by e-mail. However, I have been assured by the computer "whizz-kids" that this is a thing of the past. We now also have other e-mail addresses in addition to "iahr.nl". We can now be reached through our new address "iahr.org". Both iahr@iahr.nl and iahr@iahr.org can be used for the foreseeable future.

Into the new Millennium

Our homepage can also be found under: http://www.iahr.org/

We are currently building a new internet site, which will contain in an easily accessible form all the information our members may need. It will be easier to "surf" and will have lots of links to other useful sites.
Watch this space!

New initiatives:

New-look Journal of Hydraulic Research - JHR will change to A4 size;
Journal of Water and Maritime Engineering - published with the UK Institution of Civil Engineers, IAHR Members can choose to receive for an additional sum this quarterly peer-reviewed Journal containing practical articles, which complement JHR. The Journal with an existing circulation of some 3000, is being relaunched through IAHR with the support of other well-known national water engineering Journals to provide a forum for publishing the best papers from around the world translated into the English language.
Bi-monthly Newsletter and e-mail NewsFlash - We will continue to make these publications more informative and readable sources of information on hydraulics and will from 2000 contain information on relevant Papers published in other Journals;
Home Page - We are working on a new Home Page to be launched early in the New Year which will provide access to valuable information in a special Members area - such as JHR Papers, and reports;
Electronic Discussion Groups - Greater opportunities for sharing information will be provided through the setting up of focussed Discussion Groups relating to Section activities. The first group -already launched - is Rivers-List;
Members' Directory 2000 - A new Directory of IAHR Members will be published early next year - with a new section containing general information of relevance to the hydraulics community. All IAHR members will eventually be listed on our new Home Page;
Conference discounts - Many IAHR-sponsored Conferences are planned during 2000, most of which attract discounts for IAHR Members;
New and Existing Journals - The Journal of Hydroinformatics jointly published with IWA, is available at a special subscription rate to IAHR Members. Discussions are underway with other Journals, which will be available to our Members at reduced rates;
Student Chapters - A new scheme for Student Chapters will be announced in the New Year;
Section activities - Members are encouraged to join in and benefit from the activities of our seventeen sections - contact the Secretariat for information.

Water in Rivers Sectoral Consultation, Tokyo November 1-3, 1999

A summary message to the World Water Forum at The Hague, March 2000 has been prepared as an outcome of the Water in Rivers consultation exercise recently held in Tokyo, and organised by the Japanese Ministry of Construction with support from WMO and IAHR. The consultation brought together prominent figures from all over the world, and followed on from earlier discussions including a special meeting at the IAHR Biennial Congress in Graz.

The two page "Message" which will be presented at the World Water Forum on 20th March can be downloaded from our homepage under Water in Rivers.

More details of the World Water Forum are available at: www.worldwaterforum.org

The Second World Water Forum meeting and inter-ministerial conference in The Hague March 17-22nd promises to be a unique crossroads of the public, politicians, and technical people all with a common interest in water. The Forum will consist of a series of presentations on regional issues, water-use questions, and special subjects and aims at increasing public and political awareness of the looming crisis in water resources in the next century.
