The European Community supports within the Access to Research Infrastructures Action of the "Improving Human Potential Programme" the access of researchers and research teams from EC member and associated states to the major research facility Large Wave Channel at the Coastal Research Centre of the University of Hannover and the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. The project has started in 2000 with a duration of 3 years. It provides user groups with 100 percent coverage of travel and subsistence costs as well as free of charge access to the facility. The LARGE WAVE CHANNEL (300 m long, 5 m wide, 7 m deep) is one of the world's largest facilities of its kind. Information on the facility can be viewed on the home-page: http://www.unics.uni-hannover.de/fzk. For more information and for further details please contact: Prof. Dr.-Ing. H. Oumeraci or Dipl.-Ing. J. Gruene, Forschungszentrum Küste, Merkurstr. 11, D-30419 Hannover, Germany Tel +49 511 762 9227, Fax +49 511 762 9219, e-mail: gruene@fzk.uni-hannover.de.

WAVELAB 2nd Call for proposals. Proposals should not be longer than four pages and have to be received at LIM/UPC not later than February 1st, 2001.
The Canal de Investigaciones y Experimentaciones Marítimas (CIEM) has been selected as a large infrastructure facility, within the "Access to Research Infrastructures" Activity of the 5th Framework Programme of the EU, which sponsors new opportunities for research teams to obtain access to the major research infrastructures. The Programme covers all the travel and subsistence expenses. The Large Wave Flume CIEM (built in 1992), at the Maritime Engineering Laboratory (LIM) of the Catalonia University of Technology (UPC), is one of the largest wave flumes in the world for experimentation in the field of maritime, harbour and coastal engineering. Its dimensions (100m long, 3m width and 5m depth) and characteristics make it a very suitable tool for experimental analyses close to full-scale. For further information contact: Mr. J. Pineda, e-mail: javier.pineda@upc.es or visit the WAVELAB web site: http://lim-ciirc.upc.es/eng/ciem/index.htm.

Cliff protection - is it worth it?
Erosion of soft coastal cliffs around the world is a significant risk to coastal development but stopping the process can be very expensive. To help civil engineers decide which cliff protection schemes are worthwhile, a new risk-based approach for evaluating the economic benefits of such schemes has been published in the latest issue (vol. 142 no. 3) of the ICE/IAHR Water and Maritime Engineering journal. Jim Hall of Bristol University, Mark Lee of Newcastle University and Ian Meadowcroft of the Environment Agency say the approach is preferable to current practice, which is essentially deterministic and can underestimate economic risk. A risk-based approach reflects the uncertainty inherent in recession predictions, they say. The approach, which was developed as part of a UK government-funded research project, is applicable to both protected and unprotected coastal sites. Examples are given of its application to sites prone to progressive cliff recession, large catastrophic landslides and minor recurrent ground movement. Topics of other papers in the latest issue include - Development of reach-scale 2D finite element model for floodplain sediment deposition - Geometrical and roughness effects on compound channel resistance - Modelling the impact of urban discharges on receiving waters. All papers can be downloaded for no charge at Journals On-line for a limited period. For further information please contact the editor Simon Fullalove on +44-20-7665 2448. Research Scientist, Potsdam, Germany
For the project „Process-based methods for the quantification of runoff generation" funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG). The project is part of the German-Austrian research co-operation "Runoff generation and catchment modelling" linking several research institutes. The project which will be carried out in close co-operation with the Institute of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Resources Management, Vienna University of Technology, Austria, aims at quantifying the space-time pattern of runoff generation in an alpine catchment. By performing field experiments and analysing field data the runoff generation processes will be identified and classified. In a further step, process-oriented models will be applied to de-scribe the dominant runoff generation processes and to quantify the catchment runoff be-haviour. Visiting Researcher, UK (12 months)
A major research project at HR Wallingford will develop 'Guidelines for the hydraulic design of exposed jetties'. The project will involve physical and numerical modelling, risk calculations and development of practical design tools to provide information on wave and related loadings on exposed jetty structures. The project will develop significant new information and methods and, as for a number of previous projects, will offer significant opportunities for Ph.D level or post-doctoral research. HR Wallingford have been awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship to support a visiting researcher from any EU country (excluding UK). The Visiting Researcher should hold graduate or post graduate qualifications in coastal engineering or related subject, with experience in civil engineering hydraulics, including physical and/or numerical modelling. The visiting researcher will be required to analyse numerical and physical model data to derive new methods of evaluating wave loadings, the two principal areas of unknown design information for consultants, and/or develop innovative methods to combine loading cases for practical design conditions. The post is offered for 12 months, preferably starting early 2001, and will be based at HR Wallingford, close to Oxford. The post will be supervised by Professor William Allsop, and the project is managed by Chartered Engineer Ian Cruickshank.
