Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation COURSE PROGRAMME: ------------------ The Fifth International Training Programme on Beach Management in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea will be held in Mamaia, Constanza, Romania on 27 June-2 July 2000. The objective of the course is to disseminate knowledge and to provide training on issues related to beach management. Special reference will be made to: - Mediterranean and the Black Sea beaches - Beach dynamics - Beach and dune ecology - Coastal engineering aspects - Artificial beaches, beach nourishment - Environmental impacts - Water quality - Litter management - Touristic / recreational uses - Beach ratings & awards, implementation of the Blue Flag system - Beach management guidelines Training program, which will be conducted in English, includes invited lectures, computer and audio-visual demos, presentations by participants, group discussions on selected topics, and field/observation trips to nearby beaches. PARTICIPANTS: ------------- The course is aimed at managers, planners, researchers and students whose work involves aspects of beach management. Approximately 25 participants will be selected from all the applications received. Participants will be selected on the basis of their background and country of origin to ensure regional representation. Participants are expected to have a good knowledge of English. COURSE FEES AND ACCOMMODATION: -------------------------------- The course fee, inclusive of accommodation on full-board basis for 7 nights, course material and field trips (excluding travel to and from Romania) is US$ 550. Participants will be housed in double occupancy rooms at Club Mediterrane Resort Hotel on Mamaia beach on half-board basis and a light midday lunch. Single occupancy rooms are available at an extra charge of US$ 40. Participants should bring additional funds to cover their personal expenses. Medical and accident insurance coverage is not included in the fee and participants should make appropriate provision for this prior to arrival in Romania. FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND PARTICIPANT SELECTION: ---------------------------------------------- Applicants are encouraged to seek their own financial support. However, a very limited number of support packages are available to a few participants from developing Mediterranean and Black Sea countries. Please note that not requesting or requesting a low level of financial support will improve your chances of selection.
