We hope that you would be interested in participating the conference. Please, send the preliminary title of your presentation by 6 September 2000 by e-mail to Ms. Merja Lehisto/University of Oulu (merja.lehisto@oulu.fi) so that we can plan the final conference structure, especially the topics of the conference sessions. Please, deliver this information in your organisation and network so that all interested parties would know about it. Yours sincerely, Dr. Kaisa Heikkinen Director of RiverLife project North Ostrobothnia Regional Environment Centre More about the conference: MANAGEMENT OF NORTHERN RIVER BASINS AIMS AND SCOPE The aim of the Management of Northern River Basins conference is to bring together scientists and water specialists involved in research and water pollution control of northern rivers. Particular emphasis will be put to approaching the watershed as a whole in river status assessment, water pollution control technology and land use planning. The conference gives the participants an opportunity to discuss and present issues on the current knowledge on the subject. It provides also a forum to exchange ideas and promote new initiatives on this challenging field of environmental research. SESSION TOPICS/ISSUES The three topic sessions of the conference are 1. River Status Assessment First day 2. Water Pollution Control Technology in Land Use Second day 3. Tools for Sustainable River Basin Management Third day CONFERENCE STRUCTURE Each conference day includes a common session before noon, continues with parallel topic sessions in the afternoon. The day begins with an invited plenary lecture that introduces the participants to the key questions associated with the theme. All sessions of the conference include also oral presentations. Poster session will run simultaneously alongside the sessions. CALL FOR PAPERS Contributions for the conference can be given in the form of oral presentations and posters. Those interested in contributing should submit an abstract (200-300 words) of their intended presentation to the symposium secretariat by 31 December 2000. The abstract format is not standard but should include title, name of the author(s), full contact information of the corresponding author, and mention of whether the contribution is offered as an oral presentation or a poster. Once an abstract is accepted the final form of it will be required by 30 April 2001. These abstracts will be available at the conference. One of the most important multidisciplinary fields of expertise in the University of Oulu are Northern Environmental Issues, the others being Information Technology and Biotechnology. More than 13 000 students study at the University of Oulu, three-quarters of these coming from the two northernmost provinces ( i.e. local government districts ) of Finland: the provinces of Lapland and Oulu. The University of Oulu was founded in 1958. It has grown quickly and is now one of the largest and leading universities in Finland. The university operates in eight major fields: Humanities, Education, Economics, Natural Sciences, Technology (including Architecture ), Medicine, Dentistry and Health Care, distributed in five faculties ( six faculties after January 1 st , 2000). The City of Oulu is the capital of northern Finland. The Oulu region has almost 200,000 inhabitants and it is one of the the country's fastest-growing region. The history of Oulu can best be described using three words: salmon, tar and hi-tech. In the past, the River Oulujoki was famous for its excellent salmon. Almost 10,000 people are employed in the hi-tech sector in the Oulu region. They work in large and small hi-tech companies, in the university and in research centres and institutes. The Oulu Region is characterised by large and middle-sized boreal rivers and wide minerotrophic peatland areas. The special feature of many of these rivers in European scale is their brown water colour, caused by leaching of humic substances from the peatlands to the river channel. City of Oulu is also situated near the largest rivers in Finland, the River Iijoki and the Lappish River Kemijoki. Even though Finnish rivers are some of the least polluted in Europe, their value for recreational use has deteriorated over the past decades because of non-point sources of pollution, mainly that of forestry, agriculture and as a special case also peat mining. The land-derived loading consists mainly of suspended solids, nutrients, metals and within certain areas also acidifying substances. LANGUAGE The official language of the conference is English. ACCOMMODATION Discount conference rates at the hotels in the city will be available to the conference participants. List of hotels will be given in the final program. CONFERENCE REGISTRATION The detailed program, accompanied by full registration details, will be available on 15 September 2000. ORGANISERS University of Oulu, Northern Environmental Research Network (NorNet), North Ostrobothnia Regional Environment Centre and RiverLife project (which is partly financed by European Union).
