River basin managers are more frequently confronted with plans for nature restoration or development in floodplains. This study is aimed to assist the river basin manager in judging the feasibility and effects of nature development in floodplains by searching for answers to the following questions: * How and to what extent can nature development in a river basin be predicted based on given or expected circumstances? * What is a sensible time and spatial scale for nature planning in river basins? * What management instruments are available and how should they be implemented to assist nature development in a river basin? * How does nature development interact with other functions like safety, navigation and water supply. The duration of the project is 4 years and the intention is that it leads to a PhD thesis to be defended at the University of Twente. This study will be conducted in cooperation with the Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde in Koblenz, Germany. Please send reactions or questions for information to prof. dr. C.B.
