From: "Vreugdenhil, C.B. (T&M)" To: Subject: Rivers-List: PhDvacancy 2 Date: 05 October 2000 08:18 VACANCY for a Ph.D. Student male/female for the development of knowledge-based systems in the field of strategic management of water systems Dept. of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Technology & Management University of Twente At the department knowledge-based systems have been developed for the Dutch Wadden Sea, the coastal zone in South Sulawesi, and the river Meuse. In these systems models from different disciplines, such as economics, hydrology, ecology, and water quality, have been integrated. Until now the choice of models is primarily based on intuition. The present focus of attention for the research concerns the development of structured methods for the design of integrated models for the management of water systems. Therefore, criteria must be developed to determine whether the coupling of different models is sensible. Examples of such criteria are time and spatial scales, and model accuracy. Furthermore, techniques must be developed for the application of these criteria to existing and new knowledge-based systems. Control engineering and signal theoretic concepts will form an important aspect of the research. The envisaged techniques will be verified for a number of test cases. The applicant should have an academic degree, preferably in applied mathematics, civil engineering, computing science or physics. Furthermore, the applicant is mathematically oriented and has a particular interest in water systems. For further information please contact prof. dr. ir. H.G.
