Evaluation of the Optimum Flooding Control and Water Use Scenario for Agricultural Development Along Senegal River, Mauritania

Abstract: Recently, rice consumption has increased rapidly and has become the staple food in several West African countries. Although rice consumption requires some importation, the government of each country expects to strengthen domestic rice production along large rivers for easy irrigation in terms of food security. However, productivity is sluggish owing to the lack water management systems for rivers. The risk of flooding and the high fluctuation of the water level between the wet and dry seasons decrease farmers’ motivations toward agricultural investment. To improve domestic food production, stable access to a water resource should be achieved. In this study, we suggest optimum flooding control scenarios by reproducing a flooding event and for the case study we identify various factors affecting the reproducibility of the computational fluid dynamics simulation of the Senegal River bank in Mauritania. Furthermore, optimal water usage is also considered in the scenarios to provide a stable irrigation water supply in the dry season. This study not only introduces the decision process for flood control and water use scenarios, but also discusses the technical points to carry out this process.
