Three-dimensional numerical modeling of contraction scour

This paper focuses on the prediction of local scour in a rectangular flume with a contraction. A state of the art three-dimensional numerical model was applied. The Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes equations were solved in all three directions by the means of the finite volume method. The sediment transport was computed by solving the convectiondiffusion equation for suspended sediments together with the bed load. Van Rijnís sediment transport formulas served as boundary conditions. Bed changes were calculated based on sediment continuity. The results from the numerical calculations were compared against data from physical experiments. The numerical model proved to be capable of predicting the location and the magnitude of the scour hole reasonably well. The correct location of sediment deposition downstream of the scour hole was less well predicted. Different algorithms and numerical setups were tested to improve the deposition pattern.
