Challenges to ldv measurements in large experimental facilities: optimum seeding concentration

Several experiments involving the quantification of the data rates obtained with a LDV system were carried out in a controlled tank for different values of seeding concentration. Two different seeding particle types were tested and compared under the same Reynolds number and configuration parameters. Results show the existence of an optimum value of seeding concentration that maximizes data rates for different penetration depths within the fluid. Further analysis into the light propagation characteristics has allowed for the development of a simple methodology for the proper selection of seeding concentration, regardless of the seeding type or the pathlength traveled by the laser beams. The practical approach of this methodology will help maximize data rates in LDV measurements, especially in situations where the location of the measurement volume is far away from the probe, such as in large experimental facilities.
