IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Kárahnjúkar dam spillway - design and operational experience
Author : S.M. Gardarsson, G.G. Tomasson, F.G Sigtryggsdottir, P.R. Palmason, and B. Stefansson
Hálslón reservoir, the main reservoir for the Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project in eastern Iceland, is formed by three dams, including the Kárahnjúkar dam, Europe´s highest concrete face rockfill dam with a maximum height of 198 m. The spillway for the Hálslón reservoir is a side canal overflowing weir followed by a chute which terminates at a canyon edge where a jet falls some 100m into a narrow gorge downstream of the Kárahnjúkar dam. The paper discusses the prevailing geological conditions, the main technical challenges of energy dissipation, and the design solutions applied to ensure safe operation of the spillway system. This includes laboratory model testing, aeration, geometry of the chute, baffles, oblique termination of the chute, plunge pool and a tailwater dam. The experience of the first two spilling periods in the fall 2007 and 2008 is discussed and the performance of the spillway is evaluated.
