IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Large scale particle image velocimetryapplications for complex free surface flows in river and dam engineering

Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) is an extension of a quantitative imaging technique to measure water surface velocities using simple and inexpensive equipment. Due to the advantage of the large-scale nature and the adaptability of the technology, LSPIV is used for the analysis of a wide range of different phenomena. The method is, for example, suitable to analyze the flow patterns around complicated hydraulic structures, even in cases with bed load. The present paper describes the applications of LSPIV in two different case studies carried out at the Laboratory of Hydraulic Constructions (LCH) at EPFL, namely in the framework of river and dam engineering projects. The article concludes with recommendations for the practical use of LSPIV in classical large-scale laboratory applications.
