Model research on a new flexible flip bucket of emptying tunnel and its prototype application

When rock-fill concrete dam with high water head built in narrow valley, it faces lots of challenges. One of them is the outlet pattern of emptying tunnel, which should be adaptable to different scenario when discharging flood and emptying the reservoir. Through more than one hundred experiments by general hydraulic model, a new flip bucket with curve surface, diffuse sidewall and differential outlet elevation, was discovered to meet the multi-requirements of emptying tunnel operation, after comparing fifteen different flip bucket patterns. And this new flip bucket has been applied to the project and examined by prototype tests, proved to be successful in the prototype application.
