Large-scale experimental study on flood propagation in the jingjiang reach of the yangtze river

Large-scale experimental study has been done on the flood propagation in the Jingjiang Reach of the Yangtze River under the topographical condition of Oct. 2002 in case of the occurrence of the 1954 historical floods. Comparing with the prototype data, the experimental flood peak stages (FPS) rise by 0.62~3.68m if no operation of the Three Gorges Project (TGP) is considered; after consideration of TGP the FPS drop by 0.69~1.70m. It takes 14~16hr for the flood peak transports from Zhicheng to Jianli with an averaged speed of 4.2~4.8m/s. The flood protection situation of the reach is still very severe if no operation of TGP is considered, especially that of the Lower Jingjiang Reach. Yet, after the operation of TGP, the FPS drop notably and the flood protection situation is much more relaxed, however, not enough to be optimistic.
