Application of gis and mathematical modelling techniques for design of flood protection for chhounch khad, himachal pradesh, india.
ABSTRACT The Chhounchh Khad is a major tributary of Beas River flowing through the mountainous valley of Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, India. The Khad is fed by a number of streams in the upstream reaches. The river experiences typical flashy floods during monsoon and due to the low banks, inundates the agricultural land along both the banks. Flood protection works in the form of levees are proposed along both the banks. There are no established rain/river gauging stations in the catchment and hence alternate methods are required for estimating the design discharge and other hydraulic design parameters. The integrated application of remote sensing, GIS and mathematical modelling techniques for design of flood protection embankments for ungauged Chhounchh Khad is presented in this paper. Digital Elevation Model data from ASTER was processed using GIS and HEC-GeoHMS to derive the physiographic parameters of the catchment. The unit hydrographs and storm hydrographs for the sub-basins were derived as per the guidelines of Central Water Commission from Hydro-meteorologically homogeneous catchment of western Himalayas- zone 7 and Synthetic Unit Hydrograph technique. Hydraulic parameters for the design of flood embankments were estimated from the flood hydrograph and measured cross sections of the river using one dimensional mathematical modelling software HEC-RAS. Flood Protection works in the form of embankments with river side slope protection and launching apron using stone in crates laid over geo-synthetic filter were designed.
