This extended abstract introduces a project to develop a new formula for calculating discharge over a submerged thin
plate weir as existing formulas all underestimate this. After clarifying the why this is so, the abstract outlines a new
approach which treats submerged thin plate weirs as distinct hydraulic structures and not as versions of modular
(unsubmerged) flow.
