Simulation of seawater intrusion in coastal confined aquifer using a point collocation based meshfree method

Coastal aquifers are widely relied source of supply of fresh water in many parts of the world. Due to overuse of
groundwater in many coastal areas around the world, aquifers are subjected to threats of sea water intrusion. In the
present study, MeshFree (MFree) method is proposed for the analysis of seawater intrusion problem. Most widely used
FDM and FEM methods use a properly predefined grid or mesh. In MFree method the system of algebraic equations for
the whole problem domain is established without the use of a predefined mesh but using simple nodes. MFree method
uses a set of nodes scattered within the problem domain and also on the boundaries of the domain to represent the
problem domain. As there is no meshing required, when solving for large scale problems, it can save substantial cost
and time spent on pre-processing. In this study, Point Collocation Method (PCM) based MFree method with a Radial
Basis Function (Meenal and Eldho, 2012) is developed for seawater intrusion model for confined aquifer in 2D, and
applied for a hypothetical seawater intrusion problem.
