Velocity field in a best overflows monitoring structure
Best Overflows Monitoring Structure-BOMs (device for monitoring and controlling overflow discharge and pollutants loads conveyed towards receiving water bodies) is a hydraulic structure that is placed in the overflow pipe between Combined sewer overflow structures ĘC CSOs and receiving water bodies such as river, water courses, etc. This system is an innovative solution providing reliable data (quantity and quality) whatever the geometry of the CSOs is. In order to better understand the behavior of the BOMs, velocity measurements were performed with ADV device. These measures were used as reference for the validation of the RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) approach. The results show a symmetrical distribution of velocity field after energy losses devices. In addition, the k-epsilon RNG turbulence model seems to be more appropriate to reproduce velocity profiles, particularly far from walls and from energy losses devices. All derived experimental and numerical results have supported the design and sizing phases of a field BOMs that will be built in Lyon (France).
