IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Rivercare: an integrated research on self-sustaining multifunctional rivers

River management is often a difficult task due to the many interests that are present. Hydraulic, morphological and
ecological processes interfere with human activities. At many locations worldwide, large restoration programs are carried
out, often to improve the safety, sometimes to improve the ecological values and sometime as a combination. Yet, the
various processes that determine the state of the natural system go along with many uncertainties. We introduce a
research project, RiverCare, that takes these uncertainties as a starting point to define lacks, challenges and
opportunities to improve the overall knowledge of the river system The knowledge is then used to improve models and to
develop a serious game, the Virtual river, which can be used to visualize results and improve the stakeholder
participation. In this way, management decisions gain a better support with local authorities and the general public.
