Testing of a 1/20th scale model novel vertical axis tidal turbine
In recent times, interest in tidal energy and the appetite to develop the technology has grown significantly. This has led to
the development of many different types of tidal turbine designs. As the industry is still relatively young, structured methods
of evaluating the operational principles and performance of small-scale models and commercial scale devices are still very
much in development. In this research, a 1/20th scale model vertical-axis tidal turbine is tested in a controlled laboratory
environment. The aim of the testing is to determine the primary device performance parameters including torque, power,
efficiency and device drag. The model is placed in a recirculating flume and a series of tests conducted at different ambient
flow speeds ranging from 0.4 to 1.2 m/s. Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) technology is utilised to record the flow speeds
around the device; a 6-channel load cell is used to measure the forces acting on the turbine and a full Wheatstone bridge is
employed to determine the torque and, by extension, the power coefficient. This research presents the test methodology
that was developed, including the instrumentation strategy, and the results from the testing.
