Operational wave forecasts in the southern north sea

1. INTRODUCTION
Wave forecasts are paramount for the safety of the Dutch coastal regions. Large parts of the Netherlands are well below
sea level and dikes and dunes protect the land against flooding. After the 1953-storm, the sea defenses have been
drastically improved to withstand storms with probabilities of occurrence from once in 2,000- to 10,000 -years. Although
less severe storms will not cause the failure of the defenses, they may still damage the sea dikes and pose a thread for
flood defenses, risking dune erosion and overtopping. Proper wave forecasts are thus essential for flood warning
forecasts. Furthermore, the larger ports need wave forecasts to optimize their tidal window to plan vessel movements.
Also for predicting the workability offshore, wave forecasts are needed.
In order to satisfy the need for wave forecast in the Dutch North Sea waters an operational wave forecasting system has
been set up. The system relies on a set SWAN (Booij et al., 1999) wave models, which is referred to as the SWAN-North
Sea model. After a year of pre-operational use, from 2015 on the SWAN-North Sea model will be the operational wave
forecast model of the Dutch part of the North Sea maintained by the Dutch government. This abstract gives a description
of the model set up and verification of the model results.
