Mathematical modelling of debris flows and mudslides incurring from extreme

ABSTRACT
On the 20th February of 2010 a torrential rainfall struck the Atlantic Island of Madeira, Portugal. The resulting violent
floods and mudslides claimed a death toll of nearly 50 lives and caused damage whose costs rose up to €1400 Million. The
aim of the present modelling work is to calibrate a recently developed 2DH model for torrential flows, STAV-2D
(CEHIDRO-IST), with data from the referred event. STAV-2D features an explicit Roe-Riemann solver with specific
closures for simulating the interaction of debris-flows with natural mobile beds. The existing natural environment was
discretized with considerable detail and a rainfall intensity similar to the one occurred during this event was prescribed
over each cell of the simulated domain. The simulation tool resulting from this calibration effort is expected to help the
establishment of new methodologies and parameters for hydraulic design in the Island of Madeira.
