Free-surface vortex of crest outlets induced by flow rounding side pier

ABSTRACT
It was observed in physical model tests that, in operation gate partly opening conditions, single larger free-surface vertex
may occur in front of gate only at the left or right side crest outlet, but not at the middle crest outlets. Present research
systematically investigated the effect of operation gate opening, operation head and the distance from side pier to the
reservoir bank on vortex. The tests results indicated that, the flow rounding side pier is a major influencing factor for
generating vortex with air-core; the air-core diameter of vortex decreased with increasing gate opening, and increased
with increasing operation head and the distance from side pier to the reservoir bank; nevertheless, the location of vertex
nearly didní»t change in any case; moreover, the vortex flowed along crest outlet affected the dynamic pressure of
sidewall, the pressure head may decreased, even down to a negative value, and it is dangerous to project security.
