On tidal bore formation in dissipative estuaries
We tackle the problem of which are the significant parameters that act on the tidal bore generation in dissipative estuaries. The Saint-Venant equations are used to model the problem of tide propagation into a convergent channel. These simplified equations has already found large applications in the field and are well fitted to investigate the physics of the phenomenon under study. Three non-dimensional parameters appear from the scaling of such equations, which are only dependent on external quantities of the problem as the tide amplitude, the estuary depth, friction and convergence, known a-priori. Using the 2D shallow water solver validated by Ricchiuto (2015), we show the influence of these parameters on the transformation of the tidal wave along the channel. In this way we explore the entire phase space in order to find a transition region which separates values leading to a bore from those which do not.
