Experimental research on sacrificial spur dikes to reduce scouring

ABSTRACT
Many experimental investigations have been performed to increase the efficiency of spur dikes (SDs). Previous studies
on scouring around series of SDs have shown that the scouring occurring around each SD is a function of adjacent SDs
dimensions as well as the stream conditions. It is well known that the maximum scour depth occurs at the first upstream
SD. To reduce the scouring of the upstream SD, Karami et al, 2008 introduced a protective SD to be located upstream of
the first SD with a shorter length. To further reduce the scouring around the series of SDs as well as the protective SD
itself a sacrificial SD is suggested in the present work. This SD should be located upstream of the protective SD with
even shorter length and provides a rather smooth transition from the river to the narrower section of SDs. To determine
the optimal geometric parameters of sacrificial SD, various angles and distances from the protective SD were tested for
it under clear-water condition and in a straight reach with a fixed flow depth.
