Assessment of video imaging and particle counting techniques for calculation of bedload fluxes

ABSTRACT
Sediment transport is associated to morphological changes in the fluvial domain, thus impacting many human activities such
as river management and dam operation. It is a process that has different spatial and time scales, from grain-scale to the
river basin dimensions. In the present paper only grain-scale aspects of bedload will be analyzed.
It is a fact that even in controlled laboratorial environments, bedload fluxes are difficult to measure. In this paper a prototype
device to measure the bedload sediment transport is proposed. This device works by detecting the particles¡¯ impacts on a
sensitive surface. Digital signal processing and pattern recognition techniques are employed to detect impacts and count
them. To validate the accuracy of the results obtained with this device an image processing based bead counting will be
simultaneously used to determine the solid discharge, followed by a result analysis of both devices.
