ABSTRACT
Since 2012, Brazil has suffered a major drought and consequent water crisis, affecting mainly the north-eastern and the
south-eastern regions of the country. The crisis has raised a lively debate, being the social media a relevant agent in
conveying information and fostering public participation in the discussion. Some of the main questions raised in the
discussions were: could the crisis be avoided or minimized? How can the society, institutions and water management
avoid similar crisis in the future? We found that most of the information lacks the essence of the water resources
management system and, thus, leads to biased judgements on the causes of the problem. The issue of long-term
adaptation was not much cited or well addressed.
