Experimental study on turbulent structure in narrow open channel flows
Turbulence in Urban Rivers is often different with that of Natural Rivers for the former has small aspect ratio. In this study,
experiment was set up and Laser Doppler Velocimeter was utilized to study the turbulent structure of 3D narrow open
channel flows with small aspect ratio. Distribution of mean velocity, turbulent intensity and Reynolds stress are presented
and compared with those of 2D open channel flows. The result shows that the Velocity-Dip phenomenon becomes more
intense with the decrease of aspect ratio. The streamwise and vertical turbulent intensity still obeys the exponential law
but the ermpirical constants are different with those of 2D wide open channel flows. And the Reynolds stress shows a sign
changing in the vertical distribution. Furth More, it is found that the positions of maximum streamwise velocity, minimum
streamwise turbulence intensity and sign-changing of Reynolds stress and are close to each other. Those conclusions
distinctly show the difference of Turbulent Structure between 2D open channel flows and 3D ones.
