Study on hydraulic characteristics of the emergency spillway of earth-rock dam

ABSTRACT
Earth-rock dam failure accidents often happen due to limited discharge capacity of spillway under the condition of exceeding
standard flood. Fast construction of emergency spillway on earth-rock dam has the vital significance for dam emergency
rescue. However, itís very hard to quickly design and build an emergency spillway because of unknown of magnitude and
range of hydraulic forces on it. A k-εturbulence model was used to study the hydraulic characteristics of flow on emergency
spillway. According to the results, the effect of overtopping depth, dam slope, width of the discharge breach, and width depth
ratio of the discharge breach on flow are obtained. Prediction formula of flow diffusion range and maximum section average
flow velocity were presented, which can provide technical supports fast construction technology of emergency spillway.
