Dispersion coefficients of the two-dimensional contaminant transport model for river mixing study

ABSTRACT
To investigate the effects of the hydraulic and geometric variables on the longitudinal and transverse mixing of the pollutant in natural rivers, slug tracer experiments were conducted at six streams in Korea. The routing procedures were used to calculate the dispersion coefficients on the concentration-time curves of field tracer. The observed dimensionless longitudinal and transverse dispersion coefficient, are proportional to the dimensionless parameters, W/H and U/U*. The values of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient obtained from this study and the previous study are much higher than the theoretical value suggested by Elder (1959). The observed longitudinal dispersion coefficient is one order of magnitude larger than ElderĄ¯s coefficient. Compared with the reported value of the ratio of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient of 1D transport model to the transverse dispersion coefficient, the longitudinal dispersion coefficient of 2D model is not the same parameter as the longitudinal dispersion coefficient of 1D model or ElderĄ¯s theoretical coefficient.
