Culvert performance in steep streams under sediment transport conditions

ABSTRACT
Preliminary results from an ongoing laboratory study related to single barrel culvert performance in steep streams under
sediment transport conditions are presented. The hydraulic efficiency of three idealized and different culvert inlet types
(projecting barrel, cut inlet, and wing-walls) is investigated taking into account different headwater basin geometries. The
experiments were carried out under both clear water and sediment transport conditions. The latter were simulated by
feeding coarse material at different feeding rates in order to mimic sediment entrainment in mountainous areas. The
obtained results are discussed with regard to inlet type, headwater geometry, and sedimentation patterns.
